According to the FBI's report of October 23, 1969, Tom Johnson's claim that fingerprints from the BRS, Lake Berryessa, and Stine crime scenes appeared to match was NOT true.

Anon:
Okay. I'll bite. BTW, there are MORE THAN TWENTY-FIVE UNSOLVED MURDERS IN NAPA. That's a shocking number for such a small town. 25 was just the number McMahon and Schulman looked into. Schulman writes his own books, by the way.
Your Stewart Ranch is more interesting than perhaps you know. Certainly more interesting than you let on. Here are some amazing coincidences:
1. Dennis Land and Phillip Stewart could pass for identical twins. Ray Land and Arthur Leigh Allen could pass for identical twins.
2. The Land Ranch is a few miles north of the Stewart Ranch, just outside Yountville, on route 29. If you look at the rectangle formed by route 29 in Napa County and route 12 in Sonoma county, route 121 on the south side of the rectangle is the first opportunity to drive west over the mountains into Sonoma County, and Oakville Road is the first opportunity to drive west over the mountains on the north side of that rectangle. The intersections of route 12 and route 121, and route 12 and Oakville road, are where the bodies were dumped in the Santa Rosa hitchhiker slayings. That's called "geographical profiling,"
3. As an avid hunter and diver, Allen was well known to the deputies and park rangers of Napa and Sonoma counties. WELL known. Hal Snook, the Land brothers, and Phillip Stewart all knew each other from these activities, and from Snook's sporting goods store in Napa. All but Allen were also familiar with Snook from their classes in Criminal Justice at Napa Junior College. It is highly, highly, highly probable that David Faraday knew Snook. There was no official Scout affiliated Explorer program in the area at that time (there has always been a looseness in their association, anyway) but if there was any kind of Explorers getting off the ground at that time, it would have involved Snook and Faraday. The explorers have always welcomed girls, and David may have been recruiting Betty Lou. I'm having a haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard time getting anyone to say one way or the other if Snook was ever a Scout leader. The question interests me for several very, very good reasons.
4. Hal Snook was a veteran of the jungle fighting on Mindanao in 1945. The communists were of more concern to his commanders than the remaining Japanese soldiers, and the Amercan forces were there to ensure that the anti-Communist Tad-Tads would dominate once the Japanese were driven out (this fight had been going on since long before the war started.) Jim Phillips Crabtree served in that exact same theater in the 1960s, fighting alongside and training and equipping the sons of the Tad-Tads that Snook had fought alongside. They believe that the enemies they kill will become their slaves in Paradise, BTW. In other words, Crabtree and Snook had a LOT in common. Crabtree somehow got a job at a newspaper. He may have learned what he needed to know to land that job from Snook. Snook may have learned a lot of what he knew about the chemistry of explosives and narcotics from Crabtree (Crabtree was a highly intelligent former Green Beret.) Crabtree matched the description Mike Mageau gave to police of the shooter at BRS. He also described the killers car in terms of "resembling Darlene's ex's car" according to some. He is BY FAR the best suspect in Darlene's murder. His adoptive father was a CHiP in Northern California, and may have been friends with Snook, who ran two small town newspapers in the same neck of the woods when Crabtree was a boy.
5. Snook spent a LOT of time with boys and young men. 'Sall I'm saying. But Dennis Land was definitely gay (of the he-man woman hater type) and Faraday, a varsity wrestler, only went out on one date with a girl his whole life. His own mother said he never showed any interest in girls until Betty Lou, and one reason for his interest might have been that there would have been zero chance of sex on her part. All of the witnesses who saw them parked along the highway that night said they were sitting in their own seats, behaving themselves. Crabtree obviously had serious, serious problems getting along with women. Ditto for Allen, who molested mostly boys. And Snook seems to have been, at least unofficially, a kind of "scoutmaster" for these guys.
Do you know anything about Phillip Stewart's personal life? Any reason for suspecting him of murder, other than finding a body on his family's ranch?
Thanks for your comment!

Avid and Pete:
I don't know about the angles/locations, but there are lots of vague (so far) indications that, yes indeedy, Mount Diablo, the place, is very meaningful. Very.

Tom,
I've read all your books on this subject. Thank you! Very interesting read.
I believe this is the first time I've read you mentioning Mount Diablo though. Can you elaborate?

These amazing coincidences are indeed... amazing. Will you be able to provide evidence to substantiate these claims?

Yeah. I wrote three books. This website is the footnotes to those books.
Thanks for your question!

I am not sure why I am finding it hard to reply to some of these posts. Anyway, can you elaborate re Mount Diablo? I take it this Hal Snooky guy was a pedophile and there was a ring of them? do you think the Heskett girl was a victim? I did read the comments on the Napa cold case piece. It seems a writer or two expressed fear and had some unnamed dirt on the Napa PD and alluded to nefarious going on at the Stewart Ranch. I posted a link of Ray Land below but cannot find pics of Dennis Land. The suspect in LB and the Stine murder were both said to walk oddly, "lumber was a term used. Perhaps a limp? Do you know anything about that? Used to live in Santa Rosa not far from some of the dumping grounds of the hitchhikers' bodies. You think Land did those? Alone? napavalleyregister.com/news/local/cold-case-unit-looks-to-wrap-up-mysteries/article_30b075ac-8c24-11e1-beb2-0019bb2963f4.html

Lassie: Yup: that's a pic of Ray Land. I have a pic of Dennis Land, but I don't technically have the legal right to publish it. But he looked EXACTLY like the guy in the sketch who was hanging around staring at the girls on the beach. There's no evidence THAT guy killed anyone, but it seems about 98 percent sure Dennis Land was that guy. And he had brown wavy hair, just like what Bryan and Cecelia could see under the hood.
The old Land family prune (now grape) farm and ranch was on Route 29, and so was the Stewart Ranch. During the period of time of the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker slayings, the Land Ranch house was unoccupied, (until Dennis came home from the Army the summer of 1969, after his grandfather died.) And of course, there were several outbuildings, as well. There was some evidence that at least some victims were held captive for a few days.
There are two roads west over the mountains from Route 29--and they lead straight to the two crossroads where several of the SRHS victims were dumped. Dennis was big enough, strong enough, creepy enough, and NO ONE would have thought twice about a California State park Ranger pickup truck being on those roads any time, day or night. And yes, according to some people who knew him growing up, he had a, um, "good" motive. And he was and is certainly the PRIME suspect in the similar Shepard/Hartnell attack.
Bryan once stated in an interview right after he got out of the hospital that when the pickup truck stopped on the dirt road on top of the levee where Bryan had crawled to, his first impression of the driver when he got out of the truck was, "Oh, no, he came back." After he saw the uniform patch on guy's shoulder, Bryan thought, "Oh, well, no, it's not him."
The links to Mt Diablo are directly linked to an open investigation that I am pretty sure is connected, so, at this time, I'm not really in a position to publish much on that. Yet.

What is the quick answer to the story posited by Gary L. Stewart author of "My Father Was the Zodiac Killer"(something Like that)? I read the book several years back and it seemed intriguing. Was it a fabrication?

Well, let me just say, that the handprinting that supposedly matched the "Zodiac Killer" letters did not belong to the "suspect." It belonged to the PREACHER who filled out the marriage license. And even then, only 4 letters of the alphabet supposedly "matched." And not even that well. The same Questioned Documents Examiner (Mike Wakshull) who "certified" that fiasco admitted privately that my suspect's handprinting matched 29/29 letters and symbols EXACTLY.
