I have been relatively familiar with the Son-of-Sam murders and the recent Netflix series and Manny Grossman walk-and-talks revived my interest. The following may not be related to the Son-of-Sam murders at all, but I think it is interesting and could be another component. Briefly, and explained in more detail at the link below: Humane Societies have been around in the US since after the Civil War. The largest was the American Humane Association (AMA - founded 1877.) Up until about WWII, the AMA took in orphaned Children as well as dogs. In the early 50s, the United States Humane Society (USHS) split from the AMA. The split was largely over the AMAs refusal to endorse spaying and neutering. (They were concerned Children would be sterilized next. The slippery slope to Eugenics.) The USHS was founded by Fred Myers. Myers was connected to Communist Groups from the 30s onward. (A number of Communist Groups were backed by the Rockefeller and Carnegie Foundations. The reasons are a different Rabbit Hole.) Another early supporter was a man named Cleveland Amory. If you read Cleveland's Wikipedia page, he seems like a decent guy who likes animals and comes from a wealthy Boston Family. Wikipedia does not mention the Cleveland Amory had a brother named Robert Amory, Jr.Robert Amory Jr. was the Deputy Director of Intelligence at the CIA from 1952 to 1962. (About as high as one can be at the CIA. He only had two people higher than him. Allen Dulles and Gen. Charles Cabell.) Amory's Co-Deputy Director, Richard Bissell (Director of Plans) is the First Cousin once removed to Robert Swan Mueller III - the special prosecutor. (General Cabell is distantly related to Bob Mueller's wife - FYI.) In any event, the USHS looks like a CIA front.Other loose ends and curiosities: - Friends of Animals - formed NYC 1957 - advocated spay-neuter. Likely received grants form USHS.
- Founder was Alice Herrington (Coincidently the same name as the mother of Clay Shaw from the JFK assassination. Alice would be too young to be Clay's mother, but the same names are curious.)
- Current head of Friends of Animals - woman last name is Priscilla Feral. (Feral? sounds made-up. A little odd.)
- Fred Myers died Dec. 1, 1963 (same week as JFK.)
- Cleveland, as a writer about the wealthy (and Animals) is known to have created a false narrative for Tobacco Tycoon Thomas Fortune Ryan (1851 - 1928.) (Ryan's sons and grandsons were connected to various CIA operations in the 50s and 60s.)

Taylor: Nice! Well, the USHS doesn't have to have been a total "CIA front." It could have just been exploited by the CIA. But, overall, well done!
And I like your point about TF Ryan's bio. That sounds a lot like "Operation Mockingbird," a long-term US government disinfo/misinfo campaign. The excuse? "Fooling the Russians." The real reasons? Good question. Which we will be answering over the course of the podcast.

Wonder if he's related to this guy: graue-edition.de/en/About-Prof.-Dr.-Alfred-Schmid-Foundation/Also, OSS Counterintel Berlin Station Chief (and later, Soviet Union Desk) and Harvard Professor Dana B Durand (the author of that extremely frank KAPOK report) married a Quaker. Her father was official Librarian of Swarthmore College. He was considered too eccentric (in other words, too sane and humane) for the tastes of the new CIA. I think he might be the inspiration for the character of Miles Kendig in Hopscotch.

Dr. Alfred Schmid Alfred Schmid was a Swiss citizen. He was born in Mulhouse in Alsace in 1899 where he also grew up until 1913 when his parents moved to Basel. In Basel, he joined the student group of the “B.C.” (Bible Circle), where he later also led his own groups. Around 1922/23 he left the B.C. to found the “Basel Circle”, a youth association related to the German Youth Movement. Dr. Robert C. Schmid - Born Wayne, Ohio about 1917. Father was Robert Schmid - Born in Switzerland about 1883. Guess what Dr. Robert C. Schmid wrote his dissertation on. More notes and clippings
