Some possible reasons why the boys survived:
1. The killer(s) couldn't bear to kill a child. But they killed Tina?
2. They were forced to participate. Then why wasn't Tina spared by being forced to participate?
3. They were spared because Justin's step dad was the killer. Then why wasn't Justin sent home and everyone else killed? If everyone was dead in 28 then who would have told he spent the night in 28.
4. They were spared because Marty was the killer AND he was surprised to find Justin staying the night in 28. Why in the world would he have been surprised? Marty said Justin had stayed at 28 the previous night also - and if Marty was the killer why not go ahead and knock them all off? Justin was not his son.
Now I'm pretty stupid but does anyone really believe that Shelia masterminded these murders and somehow convinced Marty to kill her family but didn't even bother to tell Marty that Justin was staying at her house?? Yea, I'm pretty stupid but that's about the most absurd theory we've heard to date.

I must be pretty stupid too lol. But I 100% agree with every one of your thoughts. Here are some questions I have regarding your thoughts & the prevailing theory:
1. Tina was not spared because her presence was a surprise and she was supposedly the one that screamed (although, in one of the reports released within the past year it says the screams heard were from a male, not a female). If it happened this way, why not just gag Tina like they did Sue? If they walked in with their "kill kit" of medical of tape prepared for something like that to happen. Then, as you mentioned, force Tina to participate & spare her as they did the boys.
2. Forcing the boys to "get dirty" in no way would have guaranteed that the boys would have kept quiet. If it MMB were responsible, I can believe they maybe would have believed this could have worked with Justin, but not Rick & Greg. No way MMB would have been confident enough to believe Rick & Greg wouldn't have told what happened. I really cannot believe any murderer would have counted on this. I cannot even begin to put myself in these poor kids position. However, I can understand the boys being scared to admit if it was Marty at first. But within a week or so Rick and Greg were away from Keddie & I think they would have spoken up to someone then. Or within the last 40 years!
3. I have always thought this same thing. All they had to do was bring Justin home with them & force him into silence. And you're right, no one would have known he was there. Except Sheila. But if she "was in on it" then MMB wouldn't have to worry about her telling anyone Justin had been there.
4. The fact it is now known that Justin spent Friday night at 28, it debunks the claim that it was a complete surprise he was staying at 28 on Saturday night. Let's be real, if he was there Friday night then MMB would have at the very least wondered if he would possibly spend Saturday night at 28 as well, before they headed out to the bar that night. Or....if they had this big murderous plan prepared why not say "justin you slept there last night but you cannot sleep over tonight".
I do not believe Sheila masterminded this entire thing. Sure, we are not naive and are aware there have been young girls who have done such things, trying to escape their home life. However, it usually involves that young girl and her boyfriend. Not the man her mother was supposedly having an affair with, his scorned wife, some random acquaintance staying with them, the mother of the baby's father, a dozen + aquantices, the murderer's child, children of the victims, the entire local police department, DOJ, modern day FBI, etc.
Honestly, I think it is ridiculous and I am disgusted over it. The updates to 28s homepage blasting Sheila as involved. I can guarantee my fingerprints are probably on every single lightbulb in my home. That is not proof of anything. And now stating Rick is guilty, possibly more involved than just "feelings of guilt". Wtf? He was a fucking child who went through the most horrible thing imaginable. Its sick.
I wish we could do more to help find real answers in this case.

I’m not 100% convinced Justin was actually inside 28 when the initial attack occurred.

I'm not convinced on anything about this case myself Raeman! I'd love to hear your thoughts on things.
I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where but believe it was some random YouTube comment. Anyway, someone that used to know Justin made a comment stating Justin had spoken to them about that night & claimed he had snuck out of 28 at some point during the night.
But again, its impossible to believe anything in this case with all the changing stories!

Sheila is only added to this "theory" because dmac saw the report of her print being on the light bulb. There is no way to know "why" her print was there. Here are some things that make Sheila questionable.
1. Her and Ms. Meeks story of the events of Saturday morning. She clearly lied, but WHEN did she and Ms. Meeks get this story together? And WHY? Glenna Meeks told this story several times on the old forum and Sheila never corrected her. She knew this was a lie. The forum members didn't but the police did.
2. She lied about the gun Sue had bought Johnny. Aunt Jackie said Sue told her when she picked up Sheila from her house that she told her that she had bought Johnny a gun. She and Ricky told the police they didn't have a gun in the house, Aunt Jackie told a different story. But who knows, maybe Johnny had already gotten rid of it.
3. Alyssa, Paula and Pearl Seabolt, told the story of seeing the green/white blazer in front of the Sharps house around 9:00. Where was Sheila? Why didn't she see the blazer?
4. Sheila told in the ID Discovery show how much Marty hated Johnny but yet she list Marty as a friend Sue, Johnny and Tina. Really??? Marty doesn't make the first list of Tina's friends that she told police about.

Oh for sure! I should have expanded on that thought. I would not be the least bit surprised if Sheila was found to have some involvement. Her behavior never sat right with me. The way she would answer every single question with "I can't remember ". She was definitely less than helpful back when the murders happened and when she was on the forums.
I do have a hard time believing the prevailing theory as a whole, it's too messy. I could believe perhaps sheila & the Meeks conspired over the baby. But I do not believe they would include Marty with the plan of turning around and using him as the scapegoat. I do not think they were smart enough to come up with such a plan. And say that plan worked & Marty is arrested, there's a good chance he would have named them as being involved as well. The cops covering things up for Marty because he was their drug running buddy? Nothing in the way the Smartts were living shows they were living the good life. They were struggling to get by, I'd think if he was part of this large scale drug running operation his lifestyle would have been slightly different.
I honestly do not believe anyone in this case. We know the Meeks lied. The narrative she tried to spin back in the day never made sense. We were to believe the Sharps were their best friends, yet the morning of the murders Glenna didn't even stop at 28 to be there for the kids? Then she allows the person she claimed responsible to stay at her home? The main question is why did all these people lie? It always felt like they were protecting someone.
And Sheila, at best she allowed the Meeks to manipulate her. At worst she is involved in the murder of her family. Her silence is deafening though. You best believe if that was my family & I knew I was 100% innocent there is no way the things being said would still be on the internet for the world to read. My take on it way back when is that she knew more than she was saying & was trying to keep something hidden & maybe even protecting someone she cared about. That is why I wondered if she was protecting something about Tina. Same with the boys, she is the one person I can see all 3 boys staying quiet for all these 3 years later. Perhaps they were protecting her in the beginning, expecting her to return & when she didn't they just kept silent. That is what I used to think now I'm not sure about anything. Perhaps it was Sheila they were covering for.

I agree with you hope. There is just something about Sheila and the Meeks' that dont sit right with me. I just cant sort out their stories. But what I really wonder about is when did they (Sheila,Ms Meeks) conspire to tell the story about the events of Saturday. I would think that is important. I would write more on this but I am using my cell phone, which is difficult to use!

And there’s nothing in the reports we’ve seen to back up Marty being best friends with Doug Thomas. As a matter of fact Dmac “debunked” that myth when he posted the tape recording of Doug Thomas and Ken Shanks driving around a drunk Marty while questioning him about the murders which only seems to indicate that DT was trying to do anything he could to get information about the murders.

I remember reading on one of the now defunct forums that there were reports that Tina was held, possibly drugged, at a motel for a period of time. I also remember reading about Justin telling everyone the morning after the murders to look for Tina down by the river. I’ve always thought that the boys may have been told that if they kept their mouths shut Tina would be unharmed.

Skeptic, I remember reading that as well. Wonder if we can find that post now. I can believe that may have been exactly what happened, telling the boys Tina would be ok if they kept quiet. I can see children believing that and can even see myself, as a kid, believing my sister would stay safe if I kept quiet. Then the feelings of guilt for not speaking up initially would be enough for me to continue to keep quiet & shutting things out for the rest of my life. But at the same time after all these years & focus on the case I think one of the boys would have broken their silence, unless they really have completely shut things out.
Kmik, yep, that recording shows DT & Shanks were hoping Marty would say something to help them solve the case. Its being spun like DT made & kept the recording to relive his participation in the murders or hide the fact he covered for the killers. What!?!? Lol
And Karis, good question. Something definitely doesn't sit right. Perhaps a timeline of statements by Sheila & a timeline of the Meeks statements would be helpful? And why are Richard's timeline from the previous day so far off from Sheila's?

The fact that they remain quiet after all these years seems to suggest that someone/s they are afraid of and/or feel loyal to, is still alive.

I think it also must be considered that Ricky and Greg did NOT see anything because they either slept through the attacks or had the good sense to stay in bed and pretend they were asleep or perhaps weren’t even in 28 when the murders took place. It’s baffling that investigators who aren’t opposed to using a slew of psychological techniques (even on children) where able to produce zero information from the children. IMO, Ricky and Greg have little to offer because they didn’t see the attack.

It's possible they didn't see the murders but I'd think at the very least they would have heard what was going on. It's tragic either way. It seems that Ricky stuck to the sleeping story and the Sharp kids were whisked away to Oregon so soon after the murders that it seems the police focused on the one who was talking - Justin.
I often wonder why people still post of how LE "ignored" Ricky. If he wasn't talking, and gone soon after, then there was very little they could do.

Why would anyone have to walk Sue across the room to look at Johnny when she could practically reach out and touch him? And how could she have walked with her hands and feet bound? Some theories are just absolutely stupid and this has to be one of the stupidest. Marilyn on one side and Marty on the other walking Sue over to look at Johnny - for what?

Agree. Isn’t the more likely scenario that Sue stepped in John’s blood during her attack as she was trying to move away from the attacker. The death march over to John’s body reads like a silly screenplay.
