05/22/14 Justin contacted me at the sheriff's office to speak about the Keddie homicide. Justin related substantially as follows:
Justin said that he didn't know what he could add to the case due to the lapse in time of some 33 years. Justin was extremely co-operative and tried to recall as much as possible. Justin was upset with the way the investigation was handled believing that the case was mishandled from the beginning blaming former Sheriff Doug Thomas for mess. Justin said that he had been questioned and hypnotized several times to no avail and after time passed he be became bitter at his treatment. Much of this time he refused to even talk about the case, until he met Ed Cates a published author who wanted to help Justin write a book, and the possibility of a movie. After a period of time the relationship between he and Cates became adversarial and their relationship was terminated. Justin said that prior to their separation he had several hypnosis appointments with Dr. Fred Leidecker in Pulga. Justin was surprised at his last session that Liedecker was able to channel Martin Smart 's persona through him bringing out much of what happened the night of the homicide. Justin said that he was supposed to have other sessions with the hypnotist however he and Cates had parted company and no further sessions were conducted as Cates was paying the bill. Justin said that he could not afford any further sessions. When asked, Justin said that he would submit to a completion of his hypnosis therapy to assist in any way he could to help solve this case.
Justin said that since that time he suffered from depression lost a marriage and now has remained and is working steady. Justin submitted to a DNA sample prior to the completion of our interview.
06/03/14 I sent Justin Eason's DNA sample to DOJ Chico for processing in this case.
07/25/14 Meghan Mannion Gray from the DOJ DNA lab called and left a message re: a possible match in the Keddie homicide. Megan said that she was leaving town and would return on 08/04/14."
Then follows several entries regarding the match of Justin's DNA to evidence in the CS. "Meghan asked about a bloody finger print partial on a section of wall board and of finger nail scrapings from the victims, for additional analysis. I advised her that I would research this on my end for further information."
141024 Mike was attempting to get help from a criminal psychologist in how best to approach Justin. This is part of the resulting letter sent to the FBI's BSU. Again, this is before Mike realized the extent of Loon's involvement in the planning and committing of the murders. This letter resulted in him connecting w/ Reno FBI Glenn Booth:
"Most recently, we have developed DNA evidence related to a possible witness/participant in this case. The subjects name is Justin Eason (aka Smart) At the time Eason was l2 yrs old and was inside the residence the night of the homicide, his stepfather Martin Smart is one of the main suspects. Through hypnosis and previous interviews it is believed and theorized that Eason walked into the homicide after which he witnessed or possibly assisted his stepfather after being threatened with the lives of his mother and brother. Evidence in the crime scene produced DNA from Eason on tape used to bind the victims in this case."
