In a house a hundred yards or so from Berkowitz's Pine St apartment in Yonkers, lived Sam Carr and his family. Sam Carr is apparently the "Sam" mentioned in the (so-called) Berkowitz letters to police and Jimmy Breslin. Carr ran several businesses out of his home, including an answering service (kind of a landline-based, human version of Siri.) According to the Son of Sam letters, the Son of Sam killed at the behest of a blood-thirsty (literally!) Father Sam.
Who was Sam Carr, and what the hell did he have to do with David Berkowitz and the Son of Sam?

Here's a quote from a NY Times article from Sept. 21 1977 by Ronald Smothers. The Kiwanis officer called him "the real Sam in the SOS case".
"As he sat at the luncheon with his friend, the presiding Kiwanis officer saw him and announced that the “real Sam in the Son of Sam case” was among them. What I find telling about Sam Carr was that he died in 1996, the same year as Mr. RE. Shortly before the SOS case was to be reopened. Once these two guys died, the case was never reopened. I think Sam was more involved than people think. they were going to reopen it to investigate a few key people I guess. Maury said when Howell died they sent the art school sketch artist in to identify if it's the guy he seen in Untermeyer park, the guy came back and said it was. He also said Howells coffin had upside down crosses in it.
