Is there any mention in any report of a piece of Stine's shirt being missing at the crime scene? Could you please refer me to the report(s)?
Are there any crime scene photos of Stine lying face-down that show the back of his shirt? Could you please refer me to those photos?

Good question! Answer: Nope. The police photographer/crime scene tech did not arrive until after first responders had rolled Stine over onto his back.

So there was no mention of it in any report whatsoever? Even from the person who logged the shirt into evidence? It wasn’t until the pieces arrived in the mail that the authorities noticed the missing piece?

Thanks for the reply. What order are your three books meant to be read in?

Doesn't matter. It's more of a pizza than a sub. More of a circle than a straight line. I usually recommend starting with GZKH1986 because you need to understand that 90 percent of what you think you "know" about it is lies told by Graysmith. Then GZKH1969 gets into what really happened, who the real suspects were, what the real evidence was, and finally, who actually wrote the letters. Myth of Zodiac is all about how the tabloid media created "Zodiac" before the whole thing officially started. But you could even start with that one.

I finished reading two of your three books: Myth, and’ 86. Great stuff, and I really enjoyed! One nagging thought about the Stein shirt. Whoever perpetrated getting the pieces and doing the mailing must’ve known there were no crime scene photographs of the intact shirt that would eventually expose the myth?

Weeelllll...nooooo...I think it's more likely that they noticed a piece already missing, and ASSUMED that someone DID put it in a report. Otherwise, missing pieces would have been suspicious. See?

I finally get it. A piece was torn off by the killer (for whatever reason). Then it was the addt'l pieces that were later torn off and mailed. Right? BTW I've now read all 3 of your books. GOOD STUFF! A step further, the original piece was likely torn off to use as a rag? If so, the killer might've had combat medical training?

Thanks!
Well, it LOOKS like the other pieces were torn off after. A blood stain/fiber expert says he thinks I'm probably right, but he would like to examine the pieces directly before going on the record. Which is understandable.
And yes, it's possible the killer had learned the habit of tearing off a piece of shirt tail to use as a bandage, since that would be the "cleanest" part of the "uniform." And such a piece would also work as a rag to wipe off fingerprints. According to the witnesses, he wiped the REAR drivers side door (where he got in,) the REAR passenger door (where he got out) and the FRONT passenger door, where he reached in and messed with the corpse, etc.
