I just don't believe Alyssa Seabolt was seeing Dana. I also don't believe that Sheila had ever spent the night with Alyssa before that night. I will double check what she wrote in her book but I think she said Alyssa was her "new" friend. This was probably true because Sheila had only been back to Keddie for about 2 months. When she wrote her book -years after what she told in 81- she said that Alyssa liked Johnny - and that makes sense. Nobody ever even insinuated that Sheila and Dana had a connection so she probably thought no one would ever put that together.
They knew the boys were spending the night at 28 - that's the only place Sheila could hook up with Dana and Alyssa with Johnny - and that's why Richard didn't have a clue because none of them wanted him putting a kink in their plans by inviting himself to 28. That's why they were hanging out in the yard while the boys raked leaves - they were discussing their plans for later on - hence Sheila coming back and forth to 28 to see if the boys were home yet.
I think it was easier for Alyssa to say she liked Dana (who hadn't been to 28 much - if at all) versus her parents finding out she really liked Johnny who had been right next door, where she wasn't supposed to go, all along.
I think Dana was seeing whoever was handy and maybe possibly be the reason he and Johnny went over to Kathy B.'s or to hang out and drink tab cola on a Saturday night.

Yes! I have thought the same thing. Sheila & Dana and Alyssa & Johhny. Can't see Mrs. Seabolt approving of her daughter seeing Johnny Sharp. Dana was her excuse to spend time with Johnny. And that's where the PON entry came from. Sheila liked Dana but was trying to keep it low key because of Richard.
Mrs. Seabolt said in the documentary that the girls wanted Alyssa to spend the night at 28 but Mrs. Seabolt shot that down. Had to switch up the plans.
I had wondered if Tina had a crush on Dana & because of that she herself had made up the story of Sue wanting her home. Now I'm wondering if that was a part of the change in plans. Tina goes home so when the boys come home she can tell them plan A didnt work. Sheila & Alyssa had to stay next door, they'll be up waiting. Tina stays dressed to pass the message onto the boys when they get home & perhaps hoping she can be included in whatever plans were made.

I think you are right. The Seabolts would not have approved of Alyssa seeing the wild neighbor boy - and they probably didn't know enough about Dana (or anything at all) to think one way or another.
Could it be possible that Sheila wanted Tina to go home because then Tina would be off in the back bedroom sleeping, unaware that Sheila and Alyssa were meeting the boys outside/in basement? If Tina stayed at the Seabolts she might catch the girls sneaking out and run the risk of informing the Seabolts or telling Paula or Pearl who in return might tell the Seabolts.
It seems impossible to believe that Sheila and Alyssa didn't know (or hope depending on if the Dorriss okay'd it) that J&D were coming home to 28 that night!!! That's why Sheila was in and out of 28 a couple of times to see if they were back. Did they ever meet up that night or were the boys killed before that could happen??
Alyssa Seabolt might be willing to talk?? Golly have you tried talking to any of the Seabolts if you/they are still in Quincy? Wouldn't it be great if they were willing to talk after all these years?

Forgot to add:
Early that Saturday morning Sheila had asked Alice T to spend the night at 28 so no way she planned a murder for that night. Sheila had also asked Alice on Friday to spend the night but her mother wouldn't let her. Sheila had no idea Dana would be with Johnny until they stopped and picked them up walking near the park, on their way home to Keddie.
So it really worked out well that Alice could not spend the night Sheila because after picking up J&D hitchhiking, and going back to Keddie, standing around outside talking with J&D while they raked yards, they were all 4 able to hatch up a last minute plan to spend the night and meet later if Dana was allowed to spend the night at 28. Who really knows if Alyssa was even excited about these plans or if she let Sheila drag her along?? Sheila and Alyssa asked to spend the night together after they talked with J&D - very last minute

That is a great point about Sheila asking Alice to spend the night when a murder is supposed to go down.

According to 28 Zonita was interviewed on the 14th and said, “After playing much of the day Alyssa asked Sheila to stay the whole night. Paula asked if Tina could stay over, too, and Alyssa said no because Sheila had never stayed over and Tina spent almost every Fri. and Sat.
So there it is - this was the first time Sheila had spent the night and the request seems to have been made after playing much of the day, or after talking to J&D.
According to Zonita, it seems that Alyssa, not Sue, Tina, Sheila or Zonita made the decision for Tina to go home instead of spending the night.

Yes, great points kmik! Why would Sheila invitie Alice to sleepover 28 if she knew the murders were going to happen.
And Zonita's words in 81 are the most reliable. Seems they did just want it to be a sleepover for the older girls, as they've said before (with no little sisters hanging around to mess up any plans they could have had).
EDIT To Add:
Alice's mother confirmed she was asked to spend Saturday night at the Sharps. Isn't this where the story of Sheila's "failed sleepover" originated? So sheila went from planning this sleepover at her house to then changing plans & deciding it was a good day to have her family murdered? I dont think so.
