Manson's biological uncle, Darwin Orell Scott, was found murdered in Ashland, KY on May 27th, 1969. He was repeatedly stabbed to death (19x) and robbed.
Here's where the info gets interesting. The LAPD alibi'd Manson by citing a letter sent to his parole officer explaining he (Charlie) was heading back to Spahn Ranch. The date stamp was the justification for confirming of the alibi. During this same time Manson also spoke with his PO and explained he would be traveling with Dennis Wilson on a Beach Boys tour (not completely unbelievable - altho it did not happen).
Back to Ashland KY around the time of Scott's murder.. a local biker, accompanied by young men and women, began raising cane in town sometime during late April/early May. The leader of this gang was nicknamed "Preacher". By local accounts the group was spreading drugs to the local youths along with offering sex and the allure of a community lifestyle. Stuff of the 60s.. The gang settled into the area by setting up a temporary camp at an abandoned farmhouse outside of Ashland. Growing tiresome of the negative influences, locals grabbed their pitchforks (editorializing) and burned it to the ground while the gang was away. The gang moved on shortly afterwards..
The kneejerk association for "Preacher" falls to Bruce Davis with his fascination of religion and cult/commune activities. During this time, Davis was available for a KY trip considering his return from London was completed earlier in April. Bruce had previously been enjoying International travel financed by a family inheritance via his hometown of Kingston TN (about 3.5 hr ride to Ashland). It's very likely he was somewhat familiar with the eastern KY area. You have questions about the travel distance from CA? Krenwinkle visited the deep south multiple times to spend time with her biological family while being accompanied by members of the Manson group.. those were cross country hauls to Mobile, Alabama.

BUT! The more interesting, and plausible, identity of "Preacher" would be a gentleman named Dave Ewing. Tom O'Neill references "Dave Ewing" on page #56 of the book "Chaos": "7-26-69: Dave Ewing knocks on front door of Gary Hinman's home, Susan Atkins answers door carrying candle, said Hinman in Colorado. (He was being tortured at the time.)
In addition, according to documents in the LASO files, Ewing was a biker known as "preacher" who lived with Hinman in 1968 and knew the Family well. Ewing could have provided a physical identification of Atkins at the Hinman home during the period he was being tortured and murdered, but for reasons unknown he never testified in any of the Hinman murder trials. He refused to be interviewed for this book."
Ewing was never interviewed for the Scott murder either. To this day the murder of Manson's uncle remains a cold case.
