I did notice that the dust jacket image is a wider angle image, capturing more of the surrounding area than the grainy b&w photo. But the “kill for Sam Carr” written below the hole should have been visible in both images if that is its actual location. I guess it supports what you suggested, that they had to crowd the scribbles all close together to make it all legible in a small photo. Also interesting is that if all the writing was in red as shown, it sure looks like it was all done in one day as part of the ‘lone madman’ plan, along with the alleged fresh plaster chips on the carpet.

But the “kill for Sam Carr” written below the hole should have been visible in both images if that is its actual location. I found this article (see link) from 1977 from the Washington Post. In it, it mentions that "kill for Sam Carr" was written on a wall near the bathroom in Berkowitz's apartment.
