All we know is Carey was brought up on the old forum. Dmac also recieved some emails a few years ago that named Carey and another guy as the killers. A lot of people think Chuck "injected" himself into this but according to statements Maggie L. Is the one who brought Chuck to the attention of the police (who did not seem to know when they brought him in for questioning that he was even in Keddie that night). He was brought in for cuts on his hands.
But Chuck's name was brought up a couple of times in statements as having had a party that night. He may have "injected" himself in later years but not at the beginning.
You're probably right, if Carey was ever looked at or questioned that's just some of what we haven't seen.
