It says to me that they all were beaten and Sue was the only one to defend herself. Even if the boys hands were tied they could still lift up their arms to ward off blows - but no wounds to the arms either (and no blood under the bindings). So after being bound did they just sit still and let somebody beat them or were they already unconscious?
