And, only because I've already gone down every rabbit hole possible:
Are there any cop's kids that could be involved some how in this?

Tom S's stepfather was a former PCSO officer. Rumored to have also lived in Keddie. He was Abernathy's right hand man, "Chief Investigator", head of the Drug Task Force and worked with narcotic informants. He was one of the officers let go when DT became sheriff. He claimed the firing was over "political reasons" but lost in court. News articles from the 70's report on misc abuse of power complaints. He was also an investigator on the Kathy Howard murder.
Interesting considering Tom S is also related to Henry T & there were old rumors of Tom & V having their own party (acid party) that night. In the confession to his coworker, Henry said he & his friend were at a LSD party at Tom's cabin, left and headed next door to the Sharps cabin. "974" believed Henry was telling the truth based on the emotions he displayed.
The problem LE faced with this case was too many suspects & too many contradictory statements/lack of assistance from the public!!
And of course there's Howard & co which had a cop and the county attorney within their families.

Exactly, there's no way that happened. I lived in Virginia and worked in D.C. for years and interacted with many FBI Agents. According to them cases are not only assigned by superiors but screened first to avoid interpersonal conflicts. What I don't get is that the FBI should have been more involved. This was a missing child case. EDIT: I meant to quote hope from her post: "So Crim & Bradley were able to just hop on a helicopter and head on over to Plumas County to run an investigation for the next several months+. And their superiors were ok with this? Them going rogue and being M.I.A for any other assignments? Nope no way. I suppose the easy out for that is claiming their boss was corrupt too. There's a chain of command for such things and they just happened to be the agents that were assigned to the case."

Thanks for sharing that info Anvil! It's great to hear from someone who has first-hand knowledge of such things. Interesting to learn the FBI utilizes a screening process when selecting agents for an assignment. Makes complete sense but I was not aware.
It is too bad the FBI didn't have a larger presence in this case. Wish they would have. They certainly would have been beneficial to the investigation with all the resources they had to offer. I hate to say it, but it's possible the FBI backed out because they weren't so sure a kidnapping had occured. A news article at the time reported the FBI would be backing out because the DOJ were also assisting in the investigation, providing resources & doing a thorough job. It also mentioned the absence of a ransom note, etc which would have been proof of kidnapping.

Great info and Thanks for bringing that up anvil, makes alot of sense. Lol, I had a brilliant cousin who applied with the fbi....and failed miserably! Your cousin shouldn't feel bad. D.C. is entirely based on who you know, your connections, your family's connections, and the like. That's just to get in the door. Getting promoted without connections, forget it. For this reason, the good agents don't make it a career. Once they figure out how it works, they hang around long enough to get good government connections and take high paying private security gigs.
