JOHN S. SHARP, DOB NOVEMBER 16, 1965, AND A NEIGHBOR, DANA
PAUL WINGATE, DOB FEBRURY 8, 1964. AUTOPSIES CONDUCTED
DETERMINED THAT GLENNA SHARP AND JOHN SHARP WERE BOTH STABBED

STABBED. A HAMMER WAS THE APPARENT INSTRUMENT USED IN THE
BEATING OF GLENNA AND JOHN AND A CLAW HAMMER AND A BLUNT INSTRUMENT
SUCH AS THE BARREL OF A RIFLE WERE THE MUDER WEAPONS ON DANA
WINGATE. WINGATE'S THROAT WAS ALSO TORN OUT WITH THE CLAW HAMMER.
ALSO FOUND AT THE MURDER SCENE WAS THE FRONT SITE RAMP FROM
A RIFLE WHICH HAD APPARENTLY BROKEN OFF DURING THE BEATING.
NO SUCH WEAPON WAS LOCATED. ALL THREE VICTIMS WERE BOUND HAND
AND FOOT, THE TWO BOYS HAVING BEEN BOUND WITH ELECTRICAL CORD
AND MRS. SHARP HAVING BEEN BOUND WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE WRAPPED
AROUND HER ANKLES AND PULLED UP AND WRAPPED AROUND HER WRISTS.
HER PANTIES WERE STUFFED IN HER MOUTH AND A HATBAND FROM
WINGATE'S COWBOY-TYPE HAT WAS ALSO TIED AROUND HER MOUTH. MRS.
SHARP WAS WEARING ONLY A HOUSECOAT. AFTER BEING KILLED, MRS.
SHARP WAS COVERED WITH A BLANKET WHICH HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM
HER BED IN AN ADJOINING BEDROOM. SHE WAS NOT SEXUALLY ASSAULTED.
ALTHOUGH THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN A VIOLENT
STRUGGLE PRIOR TO THE MURDERS, SOME PIECES OF FURNITURE FROM
THE SHARP LIVING ROOM WERE NOT IN A CUSTOMARY POSITION. A
CUSHION FROM THE COUCH HAS BEEN PLACED UNDER THE HEAD OF WINGATE

IN THE HOUSE, INCLUDING AN ADJOINING BEDROOM WHERE THREE
JUVINILES WERE ASLEEP DURING THE MURDERS, ALTHOUGH ONLY A SLIGHT
AMOUNT OF BLOOD WAS FOUND IN THIS ROOM. THE THREE OTHER MINOR
CHILDREN, AGES 5, 9, AND 1? <10 or 13>, WERE UNHARMED AND DID NOT LEARN OF
THE MURDERS UNTIL THEY WERE REMOVED BY A NEIGHBOR THE FOLLOWING
MORNING AFTER THE MURDERS HAD BEEN DISCOVERED. ALSO LOCATED
IN THE MURDER HOUSE WAS A .22 CALIBER PELLET WHICH WAS LOCATED
ON THE LIVING ROOM FLOOR. ADDITIONALLY, NUMEROUS SMALL KNIFE
MARKS WERE LOCATED IN LIVING ROOM WALLS, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT KNOWN
WHETHER THESE MARKS WERE IN THE WALL PRIOR TO THE MURDERS. TWO
BLOODY FINGERPRINTS OF QUESTIONABLE VALUE WERE ALSO LOCATED ON
A LIVING ROOM WALL.
ALL EVIDENCE REMOVED FROM THE SCENE HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE
CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE LAB FOR PROCESSING.
THE MURDERS WERE DISCOVERED BY MRS. SHARP'S DAUGHTER, SHEILA

JOHN SHARP AND DANA WINGATE APPARENTLY RETURNED HOME SOMETIME
AFTER THAT, AFTER HAVING HITCHHIKED FROM QUINCY, CALIFORNIA.,
APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES AWAY. THE BOYS WERE LAST SEEN HITCHHIKING
FROM QUINCY BY SEVERAL FRIENDS AT APPROXIMATELY 8:30 P.M. THEIR
EXACT METHOD OF TRAVEL TO KEDDIE AND THEIR ARRIVAL TIME IS UNKNOWN.
MRS. SHARP IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING DIVORCED FROM HER
HUSBAND WHO IS CURRENTLY WITH THE U. S. NAVY SEABEES, STATIONED
IN SLATON <Groton>, CONNECTICUT. HE HAD BEEN ADVISED OF THE DEATHS
THROUGH THE RED CROSS AND WAS DUE TO ARRIVE IN QUINCY THE NIGHT
OF APRIL 13, 1981. MRS. SHARP WAS ALSO KNOWN TO HAVE A BOYFRIEND

HIDING PLACES ARE UNKOWN TO HER FRIENDS. SHE REPORTEDLY KEPT
THESE HIDING PLACES SECRET ONLY TO HERSELF BUT WAS NEVER KNOWN
TO REMAIN IN THESE PLACES OVERNIGHT. SEARCH OF THE SURROUNDING
AREAS BY PLUMAS COUNTY SEARCH AND RESCUE AND FRIENDS AND
NEIGHBORS OF THE VICTIMS FAILED TO LOCATE ANY TRACE OF TINA.
LIAISON WITH PLUMAS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, QUINCY,
IS BEING MAINTAINED SHOULD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BE DEVELOPED
WHICH MAY SUPPORT A VIOLATION OF THE FEDERAL KIDNAPPING STATUTE.

We found a few interesting things in the report:
A HATBAND FROM
WINGATE'S COWBOY-TYPE HAT WAS ALSO TIED AROUND HER MOUTH.
6:45 - 7:00 pm Timeline a
Luclia Shumway sees Dana coming from the area of FR apartments. He was wearing a blue with wide tan striped shirt, light cord pants [conf by autopsy report] and a cowboy hat. (contradicts other statements).
INTERVIEW OF SHIELA SHARP DETERMINED
THAT SHE LAST SAW HER MOTHER ALIVE AT APPROXIMATELY 10:00 THE
PREVIOUS NIGHT WHEN SHE LEFT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH THE NEIGHBOR.
TINA WAS ASLEEP IN THE BEDROOM SHE SHARES WITH HER MOTHER AT THAT
TIME.
Shaver Report:
Due to the emotional state of Sharp, Sheila Ann, I contacted her later approx 1645 hrs at Davis residence 25 N. Mill Crk. Rd. Qcy. She said she spent the night with the Seabolt family. Her sister Sharp, Tina was at the Seabolt res until approx 2200 hrs. and went home because her mother would not allow her to also spent night there. She said that a neighbor boy was also spending the night at her home with her brother, his name Smartt, Justin Dewayne 12 yrs. She said that when she left for Seabolt’s house approx 1900-1930 hrs, her mother, brothers, Greg, Richard and sister Tina were there and according the her mother her brother John was coming home later bringing Dana Wingate to spend the night. Tina joined her later at the Seabolt res. Where they watched TV until approx. 2200 hrs and Tina went home. Approx. 0800 hrs Sharp, Shelia Ann left Seabolt res., went home to change clothes and planned to attend church. She entered the home through the unlocked front door. She immediately saw the bodies on the floor. She didn’t ID any of the bodies but saw that two were bound, bloody and saw a knife on the floor. She ran back to Seabolt’s res. Told them what she had seen and they called of had someone call S/O. She then went with Seabolts to see about others that might be in the house. They looked in the window to bedrooms and saw that the 3 boys were still sleeping. They checked the other bedroom window and saw that Tina and her mother were not in bed or in the room. They banged on the bedroom window, awaken the boys, raised the window and removed them through the window. She dosen’t know if anyone went into the house.
Timeline A: 8:00-9:00
Sheila Sharp went home for night clothes and returned to the Seabolt's 10-15 minutes later. Sue said Johnny & Dana had gone back to town. (Sheila Sharp/Bradley
TINA SHARP SPENT MUCH OF THE DAY OF THE MURDERS WITH HER MOTHER AND YOUNGER

Two reasons why I never took this very seriously:
1. It is NOT an FBI report about an FBI investigation. It's a memo from the BSU to other agencies which in turn is based a "report" TO the FBI from PCSO. And it's obviously full of all kinds of wrong information.
2. The BSU is ridiculously overrated. In 1981, it was considered a joke by the rest of the Bureau, and this memo is a good example of why.
Now, it might be interesting to find out who SENT them this "information." It had to be Doug Thomas, I'd say. And you'll notice it was passed along from to D.C. from Sacramento on April 13, which means Sacto got it BEFORE the autopsies were even done, and before Crim and Bradley started interviewing witnesses. Remember those notes from the autopsy taken by Don Stoy? That's why I assume this memo is based on information from Doug Thomas--he wasn't at the autopsies. Is this evidence that Thomas deliberately queered the case? No. Is this evidence he wasn't qualified to investigate a multiple homicide? Yes.
Now, what Iiiiiiiiii would like to see, is any FBI fingerprint division reports...

Dana "borrow" a cowboy hat from somebody (maybe at the dorms)? He was kinda in the habit of "borrowing" things.
For all we know this could've started over a stolen cowboy hat.

That's what I mean about this "report" being worthless. According to the autopsy reports:
Dana was punched in the face a couple of times and whacked on the ass with something like a broom handle (or barrel of a pellet gun) then some time later choked (not by hands; more likely, in a choke hold) then, some considerable time after death, hit several times around the head with a round-faced hammer. That's it.
Johnny's skull was severely fractured just above the left ear with something like a metal pipe or baseball bat etc, which probably would have been fatal within a few hours or less. Then, he was stabbed in the voicebox with a narrow, nonserrated blade (maybe a pocket knife or possibly a pair of scissors) then some little time later was stabbed in the carotid artery (it took two tries) with a narrow nonserrated blade (probably the same one) then, very soon after bleeding out, was hit around the head a few times with the same size round-faced hammer as Dana.
Sue was first battered around the head with what looks very much to have been the pellet gun (and a small round wound on her chest looks very much like she had been shot with the spent pellet that was found on the floor near the bodies. So, likely, she was shot, then battered) with corresponding defensive wounds on her hands and forearms. Then, she was tied up and gagged. Then, she was stabbed in the voicebox with probably the same narrow blade. Then, some minutes later, she was stabbed in the chest with a wide blade (apparently, the butcher knife) piercing her aorta, and she bled out. NO hammer wounds.
The other details, including various degrees of subdural hematoma, etc, indicate the following probable, rough chronology:
1. Dana was bound with the white tape, then worked over pretty good. Johnny was also bound with the white tape. Not very well, but they were bound.
2. Dana was put in a chokehold, probably sitting on a hard chair. He died as a result, but remained sitting in place, suggesting that maybe his assailant did not even realize he had died.
3. Johnny was struck forcefully with something like a baseball bat, possibly AFTER realizing that Dana was dead. Assuming his assailant was right-handed, that means he was struck by someone standing in front of him. It's theoretically possible he was hit by Dana, but Dana was most likely choked from BEHIND, so... Johnny very likely lost consciousness immediately.
4. Johnny was stabbed in the voicebox to make sure he couldn't scream.
5. Johnny and Dana were moved from wherever they were assaulted to more or less the places they were found. They were "tied together" with electric cord (NO phone cord was used at all.)
5. Johnny was placed on the floor with his head on a cushion and stabbed in the side of the neck twice in the same wound, piercing his carotid artery. He bled out.
6. Sue came out of the girls bedroom, walked through the puddle of Johnny's blood, was shot in the chest with the pellet gun, then was battered with it. Then she was tied up and gagged. Then she was stabbed in the voicebox. Then she was stabbed in the chest with the butcher knife. Then, Johnny and Dana were knocked in the head a few times (never the faces) with the hammer.
7. This all implies several things: There was no original intention to kill ANYBODY. Dana was killed accidentally; Johnny had to be neutralized; their assailants tried to make the whole thing look like some kind of home invasion; Sue surprised them; they had to silence Sue; some or all of them left the scene taking they narrow blade and the pellet gun with them; someone stayed behind and stabbed Sue with the butcher knife and hit the two boys around the head (rather half-heartedly; or, perhaps, they weren't very strong) and oddly enough, did NOT remove the butcher knife or hammer from the cabin. But they DID cover Sue with TWO blankets from the girls bedroom. Not the boys. Just Sue.
8. These facts, plus Justin's "statements," suggest two things: A. Justin did the work with the butcher knife and hammer, probably AFTER the other assailants had left Cabin 28; and B. Think about it. It's terribly, terribly simple. True? Maybe not. But terribly simple.
9. What does the physical evidence tell us about what happened to Tina? Absolutely nothing at all. But it does suggest TWO things: Tina left Cabin 28 alive, probably more or less voluntarily, some time--we have NO idea when--between 10:00pm and 8:15 am. And that SHE covered Sue's dead body with the blankets before she left.
10. Remember, there is NO evidence of ANY kind AT ALL that ANY "outsiders" came into Cabin 28 that night.

Why would we believe Justin would involve hiimself for anyone besides family? Shouldn't Justin have had blood on himself? Why was it important to take the whole tool box? I've known guys to keep their "stash" in the bottom of tool boxes. Did one of the two hammers come from that box? Why did someone need to humiliate/degradate Sue? Was Tina the only person in the cabin, including victims and attackers, who walked out of cabin 28?

Why would we believe Justin would involve hiimself for anyone besides family? Shouldn't Justin have had blood on himself? Why was it important to take the whole tool box? I've known guys to keep their "stash" in the bottom of tool boxes. Did one of the two hammers come from that box? Why did someone need to humiliate/degradate Sue? Was Tina the only person in the cabin, including victims and attackers, who walked out of cabin 28? Most people just assume Dana was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and who knows, maybe they are right. Dana had problems too. It's not talked about much but Dana had a child born sometime after the murders. Nothing is ever said about that maybe being a possibility. I'm sure the police knew this information. They baby's mother was the sister to one of the people who is listed on the persons of note list. PM me if you want that information. This guy has stated on a Quincy facebook page that Dana was the father to his nephew. As far as Justin being involved that comes from Dmac saying Justin's DNA is on a strip of medical discarded near Sue's head. Dmac has always said the BOYS were forced to participate. The only way to explain Justin's DNA being there is to assume Marty forced him to participate in the killings. Yes one of the hammers belonged to the Sharps' according to Sheila. The knives and hammer found in the house were the Sharps. Yes, Tina left that cabin that night along with someone. |

We have no idea if Justin was/was not involved in anything .Maybe he went out after the killer was gone and really bent down to check on Sue. Justin being allowed to live because of Marty would make sense but would not explain Ricky and Greg's survival.
We also have no idea if Tina was involved but we also can't be sure that she hadn't talked about her mother to some guy and when he came there and Sue put up a fight he wanted to leave her dead and as humiliated as possible. If Tina, who is basically unaccounted for on Saturday, was roaming the neighborhood and at the Seabolts all day it's possible she didn't even know Dana was ever in Keddie or coming home with Johnny. Maybe them laying in the living room watching tv was a big kink in somebody's plans so they had to be eliminated.

I've heard diffrent stories about sheilas relationship with sue and tina, what was her relationship like with johnny? I don't really believe sheila knowingly had anything to do with this. Maybe we could get a seperate thread for each Sharp and Dana? Each having their own reports,histories, and hearsays?

This all implies several things: There was no original intention to kill ANYBODY. Dana was killed accidentally; Johnny had to be neutralized; their assailants tried to make the whole thing look like some kind of home invasion; Sue surprised them; they had to silence Sue; some or all of them left the scene taking they narrow blade and the pellet gun with them; someone stayed behind and stabbed Sue with the butcher knife and hit the two boys around the head (rather half-heartedly; or, perhaps, they weren't very strong) and oddly enough, did NOT remove the butcher knife or hammer from the cabin. But they DID cover Sue with TWO blankets from the girls bedroom. Not the boys. Just Sue. 8. These facts, plus Justin's "statements," suggest two things: A. Justin did the work with the butcher knife and hammer, probably AFTER the other assailants had left Cabin 28; and B. Think about it. It's terribly, terribly simple. True? Maybe not. But terribly simple. 9. What does the physical evidence tell us about what happened to Tina? Absolutely nothing at all. But it does suggest TWO things: Tina left Cabin 28 alive, probably more or less voluntarily, some time--we have NO idea when--between 10:00pm and 8:15 am. And that SHE covered Sue's dead body with the blankets before she left. 10. Remember, there is NO evidence of ANY kind AT ALL that ANY "outsiders" came into Cabin 28 that night. I actually think you’re correct on quite a lot of this I believe Dana was forced into a seated position the choked. This could explain the bruises on his butt I’m conflicted on the Justin part though. I find it hard to believe that someone his age would know how that much about human anatomy to go further on the dead bodies. I guess it is always possible, (yes the film’s Halloween and Friday The 13th were popular at the time, and being fourteen, secretly watching scary movies with your friends was probably deemed cool) also I find it hard to believe that Justin didn’t get blood on himself leading for it to get on his sheets. like I said, I’m conflicted. also Dana’s blood that was under Sue, do you think that could’ve been from when the moved Dana and placed a cushion on the floor, as in the crime scene photos there looks like a smear next to both boys heads where they have been moved. |

Dana had been laid out with his head on the cushion face-down in preparation to stick HIM in the carotid to drain HIS blood, but the killer(s) stopped at that point and never "finished." Probably because that's the moment when Sue woke up and came out of the bedroom and had to be dealt with.

Ok thanks for that, I knew she had Johnny’s blood on the soles of her feet, that’s why I find it odd that Justin’s sheets didn’t have any on them. He had to have stepped over Johnny and Dana to get to Sue. Even if he did cleaned himself up afterwards, I still believe he would’ve missed something. |

That's a great point about the sheets. I personally find it hard to believe Justin could have been forced to participate without getting blood on himself. DT said Justin had no blood on him that morning. The Seabolts & others would have noticed. Whether they were in their beds or the closet when Jamie got them out the next morning, you would think there would have been more blood evidence (besides the door knob) had they been involved.
Let's pretend it was MMB and the boys were forced to "get dirty". That living was a small space and now there's a crowd of people, three murderers, two kids, and three bodies. Yet no witnesses report seeing any blood on there people. I just don't believe it.
Justin told LE in 81 that he tried to help Sue & claimed to place a rag on her bleeding. LE always knew it was likely he was in the crime Scene. I don't see his DNA as proof of involvement. It's possible he removed the tape off sue. Or picked it up off the floor. The piece with his DNA was on the floor, not like it was still attached to her. IMO I believe it's most likely Justin came out after the killers left. Then he could have been able to step around blood more easily. Any blood on his hands could have been washed off in the sink. All my opinion of course. And there's still things I can't make sense of, like why go back to bed instead of leaving? But they were just kids.
And it's nice to see you post Tom! That scenerio with Dana does make a lot of sense
